Gaining space without losing the Earth
At Europe's spaceport, protecting biodiversity is a priority.
To mark World Biodiversity Day, watch a video clip of the actions taken by CNES, the French space agency, to protect the natural ecosystem at Europe's spaceport.
As part of its sustainable development approach, CNES is committed to preserving Europe's spaceport's estate, a nature reserve covering 690 km2, through a biodiversity management plan.
Partnerships have been established with organisations specialising in flora and fauna, the French National Forests Office (ONF) and the French Biodiversity Office (OFB), to help protect and enhance the natural heritage of the spaceport.
Actions include:
-Study of the impact of space activity on French Guiana's biodiversity
-Protection of French Guiana's biodiversity
-Promotion of its heritage among the general public
-Involvement of companies at the spaceport in a sustainable development approach
